The Story | April Weller-Cantrell, Bourbon Baroness

Bourbon has always been more than what’s in the glass.

It’s history, patience, and the people who care enough to do things the right way. It’s the conversations that unfold slowly, the meals shared alongside a good pour, and the music that lingers long after the last sip.

In the Glass & Beyond is a space for thoughtful bourbon stories, food and cocktail inspiration, and reflections on the culture that surrounds whiskey. Here you’ll find explorations of bourbon history and standards like Bottled in Bond, conversations with people who shape the industry, recipes meant to be enjoyed with a pour nearby, and the occasional detour into music, memory, and mood.

This blog isn’t about chasing trends or collecting labels. It’s about understanding what’s behind them.

I’m April Weller Cantrell, known in the bourbon world as The Bourbon Baroness, a Kentucky-based bourbon writer, educator, and consultant. Bourbon has been both a profession and a personal passion for me, rooted in Kentucky tradition and shaped by the people I’ve worked alongside. Much of my career has been spent behind the scenes in hospitality, tourism, and the bourbon industry — helping build businesses, shape visitor experiences, and protect the integrity of the craft.

I’m a certified Executive Bourbon Steward and have been closely involved in the development of a working distillery, supporting everything from tours and tastings to maturation tracking, compliance, and public engagement. Over the years, I’ve worked with distillers, restaurateurs, and industry leaders who believe in doing things the right way, even when it takes longer.

This blog is where those experiences come together in a more reflective, unhurried way. I’ve spent most of my career working behind the scenes in hospitality, tourism, and the bourbon industry — helping build businesses, shape visitor experiences, and protect the integrity of the craft. My work has ranged from operations and compliance to storytelling and education, always with a respect for tradition and the people who carry it forward.

Here, bourbon is punctuation, not excess.

A pause. A marker. A moment worth noticing.

Welcome. Pull up a chair.
